A Dark Knight – Arrangement for String Ensemble and Percussion

UPDATE: MY HIGH SCHOOL’S STRING ENSEMBLE WILL BE PERFORMING THIS FOR THEIR WINTER CONCERT!!!

Over the last month or so I’ve been arranging a portion of “A Dark Knight” from the soundtrack to The Dark Knight (originally written by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard) for my high school’s string ensemble (as well as a small group of percussionists). Because the real song is 16 minutes long, I had to cut it down a lot to keep it a reasonable length, so my arrangement is only about 6 minutes long, taking about 4 1/2 minutes from the beginning of the song, and about 1 1/2 from the end.

I arranged the song for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, and Bass, as well as timpani and mixed percussion (bass drum, toms, and a gong). What you see here in this video is a playback of the music I created on Finale Notepad, but the audio was made by me in GarageBand (because playback in notepad sounded terrible, especially the percussion).

ARP / SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE – HQ DEMO – with Korg Minipops 7

The Solina String-Ensemble came out 1973 and was the first “stand alone” electronic string ensemble – the original “string machine”. It was a portable, cutdown version of the string ensemble, which was a part of the Eminent 310U organ. It sounds different to the Eminent 310U, although quite similar. It uses “divide-down” organ technology, is full polyphonic and has a very characterful sound.

The Solina was a great success in the seventies and was used by many artists on many recordings. The String-Ensemble was developed and produced by Eminent in Holland. ARP bought the rights to sell it under their name. Outside the USA the “ARP STRING-ENSEMBLE” is known as “SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE”. For the US market, ARP just put ARP-stickers on it…

Many manufacturers tried to copy it (Logan String Melody, Elka Rhapsody, Crumar Multiman, Farfisa String Orchestra, Jen String Machine, Siel Orchestra, just to name a few). Indeed, every organ manufacturer had one to offer…
but the Solina remains the best (or at least one of the best) with its fat, unique and charming sound.

Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream) used it on many records (Green Desert, Aqua, Le Park, Underwater Sunlight, etc.), Herbie Hancock (Secrets), AIR (Moon Safari), Mike Oldfield, Richard Wright / Pink Floyd (Shine On You Crazy Diamond), Elton John (Song for Guy), Nick Straker (A walk in the park), Geoff Downes / Buggles (Video killed the radio star), the Bee Gees and the Carpenters (on live performances) …

By the way: Jean-Michel Jarre never used this one on his recordings. He used the Eminent 310U, which sounds different.

A live performance for Seattle’s Marrowstone in the City program. The music was arranged by the genius Lennart Jansson (Link) and Gen Kim (myself as Ash Ketchum). I choreographed all the extra bits behind us as we play as well as sang the Halo theme, of course. The Tetris bit is a tribute to the old a capella group that did game themes. Lennart is playing an ocarina there, and I’m drumming the top of my violin. Hope you enjoy.

Highlights from Apple Hill Chamber Music Program’s Visit to USIP

The Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music is a chamber music school in New Hampshire which works with young people from around the world. As part of their work , Apple Hill has brought Israelis and Palestinians together to do chamber music, and found (to their surprise) that they were also doing reconciliation work. The executive director and several chamber music players came to USIP to talk about what they do and play some music. They explained how their Playing for Peace program works, giving examples of good and bad listening and cuing, as well as the conflict resolution skills that chamber music promotes — flexibility, awareness of other people, sensitivity, compromise, etc.

So, I am kind of proud of myself that I managed to write this in less than 5 hours, but I hope it sounds nice as well! I just lost track of time…

This song is Gerudo Valley from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, originally written by Koji Kondo. I arranged it on finale with a string quartet, a guitar, a piano and a drum set.
