“Old Time Dance Competition”- Fiddlers Convention

This the Friday night Old Time Dance competition from the 83rd Annual Johnson County (TN) Old Time Fiddlers Convention. Winners competing on Friday night in Adult category were: 1st- Brett Morris, 2nd- Julie Sheppard-Powell, 3rd- John Turner, and 5th- Anna Lee Hall. There was a single Youth contestant on Friday- 2nd place winner Laurel Koenig. Music was provided by The Cabin Creek Boys (2nd in Band) with fiddler Adrian Powell (2nd place Fiddle). Held every year since 1925 somewhere in Johnson County, Tennessee this may be the longest running “old time” fiddlers convention in the southern Applachians. For the last 17 years it has been held at the “Old Mill Music Park” in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee.

The recording was done in a hurry so some tunes are only once or less through each. This is just an excerpt of the show, and other parts with other instruments and musical styles can be found in other of Ryan’s You Tube videos. The tunes on this video consist of: Top of Cork Road, Haste to the Wedding, Smash the Windows, Road to Lisdoonvarna, Morrison’s Jig, and Drowsy Maggie, and Cooley’s Reel. Top of Cork Road is also called “Father O Flynn.” Ryan performs and teaches these tunes. Visit his web site for information on his performances, instructional videos, books, and recordings.

“Josie-O” + “Greenback Dollar”- Toggle Mountain Rounders, Old Time Fiddler Convention

The first number is “Josie-O” and the second number is “Greenback Dollar”. Nathan Taylor took 5th Place in the Fiddle category, Doug Sharkey took 5th Place in Banjo category, and the Toggle Mountain Rounders were 5th Place in “Old Time Band” at the 83rd Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention on 22 August 2008. This convention started in 1925 at the old high school building at Church and College Streets in Mountain City. It has been held somewhere in Johnson County, Tennessee every year since. It has been said to be the longest continuously running “old time” fiddlers convention in the southern Appalachians. For the last 17 years it has been held at the “Old Mill Music Park” owned by the Warden family in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee. This park is about four miles from the corner of Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina on the Daniel Boone Trail (TN 91) from North Carolina on in to Damascus, Virginia.
