I agree with most of your statements. The books were fantastic, but the movies just aren't up to the standard.
The ones I agree with you most on are The Dumbledore one and the muggle clothing one. The muggle clothes just look so stupid, its always on in the book about how wizards don't know how to dress as muggles, but here are all these teenage wizards in fashionable clothing.
And dumbledore! All he does is yell and sound really angry! The original actor who played Dumbledore portrayed the character really well, but the new guy is just weird...
References :
1. I agree with you on this one.

2. This is because they want the movies to look attractive to those people who have not read Harry Potter. The movies need to look modern and cool to attract a larger audience. Book-based movies are challenging to make- they have to earn the respect and admiration of the fans of the books, and those who have never touched the books. Therefore, they do things like this. To tell you the truth, it doesn't bother me too much. I kind of see it as one of those older vs younger generation sort of things- younger generation knows how to work a computer, but the older generation doesn't. Younger generation knows how to successfully dress as a muggle, older generation doesn't.

3. I think they cut this out for time's sake. They do that a lot. There just isn't enough time for each character to have their moment. So they save the moments for the main characters.

4. Once again, it would have taken up too much time. And the information the audience needs from it could easily have been put into dialogue in other parts of the movie.

5. Grawp isn't there just to be there. They use him later as a trap for Umbridge.

6. I agree with you on this, too. I much preferred the original Dumbledore, and I don't see why Michael Gambon couldn't have stuck to literary Dumbledore's character.

7. This is mostly because of time issues. The origins of the map wasn't important to the general storyline. Harry Potter has such a complicated plotline that it's crucial to not overload the audience with too much information. People would wonder at the important of Moony being Lupin and Prongs being James Potter. They'd see the connection, but they'd be like "Okay. That's nice. So?" They need to skip details in order to make the story fit and flow well within the allotted time. It's a challenge.

8. Once again, they do this to make the movie more attractive. It wasn't necessary for Dobby to be the one to give Harry the gillyweed, and it did make sense for Neville to be the one to do it.

9. Slughorn I imagined to be pudgier, but I think his face is right.

10. I actually love this idea. I think they'll do things *right* because they're taking the time to add details with this.

What you have to understand, though, is that books and movies are two completely different medias of art. Books use language to convey the story, and has pages upon pages in which to tell the story. They can use all the detail they want and since they have no visuals (aside from the illustrations at the start of each chapter), they allow readers to visualize certain things such as characters for themselves.

Movies, however, can't be much more than 3 hours. It's just impractical. And with so little time in which to tell a story (400-600 pages long in some cases), details must be omitted and the storyline must be altered in order for the story to flow well and for the audience to get all the information they need. These movies also need to be able to attract all types of fans to make a profit and be successful, like I said before.

So you see, I think these movies deserve more credit than you're giving them. Of course they won't be exactly what you wanted and they won't be exactly what Rowling wanted. But these movies are successful in that they capture the essence of the novels fantastically. And they convey the messages Rowling wanted to convey through her books. And they evoke the feelings the novels do for the corresponding events.

They're really not all that bad. I find them quite entertaining, and it's interesting to see the different interpretations that these movies provide, even between the different directors. I see the changes as a kind of creative move; I'm not sure how well they could have succeeded in making the Ministry battle in OOTP as intense as the books described within such a short timespan, if they hadn't made the Death Eaters fly. And at the time this movie was being made, Deathly Hallows wasn't out. How could the movie makers have known that the flying was restricted to only Voldemort? They really couldn't have.

So, yeah. There are my thoughts.

Edit: Oh, look, the TD Troll came by. To counter his evil deeds, I'll give everyone a TU.
References :
i know im banned, bbut i came on too ask a homework question when i saw this - answering one cant hurt......, i couldnt agree with you more, especially abt the dumbledore thing....tho im glad that seven is in two...more too look forward too, and i thought number three was good, though they should have talked about the origin of the map

i also think daniel radcliffe is such a bad harry. his acting in 4 and 5 is amazingly rubbish, and HE DOESNT have the green eyes that are mentioned about 500, 000, 000 times
he doesnt act like harry either....he hasnt got the same kind of personality or anything....the glasses are cool though
References :
First of all let me just say that I love the Harry Potter books. :)

Very well - thought out question. I really agree with point 6. I miss the old Dumbledore that they cast in the first and second movie. I was seriously laughing when Dumbledore shook Harry in The Goblet of Fire and was yelling at him. I kept thinking that the real Dumbledore would never do something like that. When reading the books I always pictured Dumbledore as a calm old man who never raised his voice, and instead dealed with everything in a calm civilized manner. The new actor gets mad many times throughout the movies and it's just not right. Not right at all.lol.

Point 10: I kind of like the fact that they're cutting it into two movies because that means more harry potter for me.. lol. But it leaves the problem where do they stop the first one and begin the second? And won't one movie have more action than the other? We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Casting: I think Harry, Hermione, and Ron were cast right and in the end that's really all that matters to me. (Besides Dumbledore)Since it's pretty hard to find actors that can exactly portray the character's.

Dobby: I also wish we could see more of Dobby. I think he's a great character! I mean there was no SPEW at all. I also miss Peeves in the movies!

Muggle Clothes: They actually do wear their robes in school. it's just out of school that they wear their muggle clothes and I think in the books this was also true because I remember Hermione saying "Ron I packed your jeans" so yeah i think they can wear muggle clothes.

*** Harry's eyes should be Green not Blue! Just saying..

Overall I think the director did the best with what he had. I mean they are pretty popular books and must be hard to live up to because so many people are expecting different things. It can't satisfy everyone.
References :
What ticks me off:
There was no Quidditch in #5
There was no de-gnoming in #2
Some of the Educational Decrees in #5 were pretty pointless.
What happened to Winky in #4? (Although she was pretty whiny and annoying...)
References :
I think both have their charms and they need to be treated separately. However, your second point is my biggest pet peeve with the movies. Seriously, I got disenchanted with the movies just before the 3rd book when they were making a big deal of the fact that you would see more muggle clothing. Excuse me, at that point we should have started to see less.
References :
I AGREE!

You forgot the absence of WINKY!!!

(depressed sigh)

They also forgot Pig. Would it really have been that hard to have an excited owl in the background, just to make me happy?

I wish the first Dumbledore hadn't died. This one made a good Gandalf, but he's too mean looking.
References :
I completely agree with you! It pisses me off how much they screw up the movies. They cut out the small details that make it awesome.

1. No Peeves - I know you already said it, but I still feel the need to vent my feelings!

2. No Bill and Fleur in the 6th movie! Seriously, Bill and Fleur are huge in the 7th movie, and taking them out of the 6th means that they're gonna have to screw up SOMETHING in the the 7th/8th movie.

3. No battle scene a the end. Are you kidding me? I was so mad when I found out they were taking it out so that they're not 'repetitive' with the 8th movie. That is like the stupidest thing ever! That battle is so crucial to the book!

4. Michael Gambon - He really messed up the character. I loved Richard Harris (R.I.P.) as Dumbledore! He was perfect in my opinion! Seriously, whats up with the beard pony tail thing Michael Gambon has?And when did Dumbledore ever lose his cool? Like in the GoF move: Dumbledore would NEVER have shaken Harry like they did in the movie. I mean, he got mad at Umbridge in the 5th book for doing just that to Cho's friend. Which leads me to the next thing...

5. The entire OotP movie - Gosh, where do I begin. First of all, they just completely cut Quidditch from the movie. And I was looking forward so much to the Weasley Is Our King Song and seeing the Quidditch trials and everything! And they cut Dobby out of the movie! Dobby was supposed to be the one to lead Harry to the Room of Requirement, not Neville. And then there's the fact that they decided to make Cho rat them out to Umbridge instead of her friend. Come on, how hard would it have been to stick to the book? And they messed up the MOM scene too! What happened to the rooms they had to go through before getting to the Hall of Prophecies? Like the brain room, and the room with the time turners and everything! I mean, I know it was a long book and it's hard to fit it all into one movie, but still, they could have done better!

6. The muggle clothes thing; they're not supposed to know how to dress like Muggles, they're supposed to wear robes. And they don't even wear uniforms after the 2nd movie!

7. They didn't mention Ron and Hermione being Prefects at all.

8. Narcissa Malfoy - I'm sorry, but the lady that they got to play her looks NOTHING like the book description. She looks like McGonnagal with more makeup and some Photoshopping. She looks kind of old - too old to be Draco's mom anyways, and her hair is weird: it's like brown on top and then blond on the sides; she's supposed to have long, beautiful blond hair. She dresses like an old lady too; I always imagined Malfoy's mom as younger and more elegantly dressed. I am not saying that she is a bad actress or will play a horrible Narcissa Malfoy, I just think that they didn't do great in picking her out because of her looks. I wish they would have stuck more to how she is described in the BOOK.

9. Harry's eye's are supposed to be green. Don't get me wrong, Daniel Radcliffe has really nice eyes, but why can't he just wear contacts for the movies? His eyes are like one of the main reasons Snape agreed to help keep him safe - they're exactly like Lily's, and Lily's eyes were green.
References :
1. No Peeves – I know you already said it, but I still feel the need to vent my feelings!

2. No Bill and Fleur in the 6th movie! Seriously, Bill and Fleur are huge in the 7th movie, and taking them out of the 6th means that they’re gonna have to screw up SOMETHING in the the 7th/8th movie.

3. No battle scene a the end. Are you kidding me? I was so mad when I found out they were taking it out so that they’re not ‘repetitive’ with the 8th movie. That is like the stupidest thing ever! That battle is so crucial to the book!

4. Michael Gambon – He really messed up the character. I mean, he got mad at Umbridge in the 5th book for doing just that to Cho’s friend. Which leads me to the next thing…

5. The entire OotP movie – Gosh, where do I begin. And then there’s the fact that they decided to make Cho rat them out to Umbridge instead of her friend. Come on, how hard would it have been to stick to the book? And they messed up the MOM scene too! What happened to the rooms they had to go through before getting to the Hall of Prophecies? Like the brain room, and the room with the time turners and everything! I mean, I know it was a long book and it’s hard to fit it all into one movie, but still, they could have done better!

6. The muggle clothes thing; they’re not supposed to know how to dress like Muggles, they’re supposed to wear robes. And they don’t even wear uniforms after the 2nd movie!

7. They didn’t mention Ron and Hermione being Prefects at all.

8. Narcissa Malfoy – I’m sorry, but the lady that they got to play her looks NOTHING like the book description. She looks like McGonnagal with more makeup and some Photoshopping. She looks kind of old – too old to be Draco’s mom anyways, and her hair is weird: it’s like brown on top and then blond on the sides; she’s supposed to have long, beautiful blond hair. She dresses like an old lady too; I always imagined Malfoy’s mom as younger and more elegantly dressed. I am not saying that she is a bad actress or will play a horrible Narcissa Malfoy, I just think that they didn’t do great in picking her out because of her looks. I wish they would have stuck more to how she is described in the BOOK.

9. Harry’s eye’s are supposed to be green. Don’t get me wrong, Daniel Radcliffe has really nice eyes, but why can’t he just wear contacts for the movies? His eyes are like one of the main reasons Snape agreed to help keep him safe – they’re exactly like Lily’s, and Lily’s eyes were green.
References :

My thoughts are that this should be sent in a letter to the people who made the movies. Thank you for putting my frustatrations of the movies down for everyone to see. The movies could have been SO MUCH BETTER:(

1. I know! I can't believe they didn't include Peeves. His parts in the books made me laugh so hard I cried! Did they really cast Rik Myall in the part? I didn't know that, but, believe it or not, I always imagined Peeves to look and act just like him!

2. This didn't really bother me. I mean, I noticed it but it was never a big issue with me. It's not like it annoys me every time I watch the movies. I suppose the characters couldn't wear cloaks/robes all the time, the only other option is muggle clothes.

3. Yes, this is one of the scenes that they left out that really pissed me off. Another was the feast in the first book when everyone is singing the school song (to their ow tune of course). Fred and George are the last ones left singing as they are singing the song as a slow funeral march and Dumbledore conducts their last few bars with his wand.

4. It would have been nice to see Nick;s deathday party but I think a Monty Python reunion would have ruined the 'whole other world' feel Harry Potter has going on.

5. Yes, Grawp did not act at all like the Grawp from the books. He was so cute when he said HAGGARD and HERMY. It was such an easy thing to do, to have someone voice him, I wish they had.

6. The second guy to play Dumbledore is just a little off. I think we only notice it because we are hardcore Harry Potter fans, whereas a lot of others wouldn't realize. But yes, his portrayal of Dumbledore is not quite right. I heard somewhere that the actor has never even read the books. It's no wonder he sucks. How hard is it to read the books of the movie you are starring in s you can get your character right!

7. I know! In the earlier movies they left out a few key details but in some of the latter movies they left out entire chunks of plot! Seriously, I watched the fifth movie with my mum (who has never read the books) and I had to keep explaining what was going on since the movie had left so much out that it didn't een make sense!

8. Mhmmm. They have the characters doing all sorts of things that they can't actually do in the books.

9. I haven't seen Slughorn in any scenes, but I have seen pictures. You are right, he doesn't look like he is described in the books. It's annoying!

10. The seventh movies will probablynot be all that great, just like none of the others were that great. But at least it is going to be double the time to get the story right. Order of the Phoenix was the longest book, right? And they left so much out of that movie. Hopefully they can fit all that is important into the two part Deathly Hallows.

Another thing that bugs me is they left out SPEW. The movies mention nothing about Hermione's campaign for House-elf rights, so what are they going to do in the Ron/Hermione kiss scene? Hermione kisses Ron because he finally understands what she's been going on about with the whole SPEW and whatnot. They have completely screwed tat scene already and it hasn't even been filmed.

Also, Harry's eyes are green, G-R-E-E-N! It bugs me so much that they use Daniel Radcliffe's blue eyes! I mean why can't they just change them digitally or have him wear contacts!?

I thought the first three movies were okay, the fourth was worse and the fifth was godawful! I will still go to see the remaining movies as soon as the come out at the cinema and I do like them, simply because I love anything Harry Potter related. But I do think that they are been buggered up in places and could have been so much better.
