So I have not been impressed with any of the movies since the first one. I thought that it was really good but since then they have just slaughtered the rest. Here are my problems.
1. No Peaves. Are you kidding? He was one of the best people in the books. In the first one they had Rik Myall cast to play his part. For those of you that don’t know who that is, he played Drop Dead Fred. He would have been perfect. They really wouldn’t have had to do much with him. Just a couple of 2-3 min scenes and then they would be free to have him pop in and out of Hogwarts scenes in the back grounds.
2. Why are they wearing Muggle clothes? To me this takes me out of the movies because it really looks like they just walked out of a fashion shoot. Not to mention that most wizards have no clue how muggles really dress. Look at the fourth book. They really had no clue and it was funny. To me it just makes the movies dry and unimpressive.
3. No Ton Tongue Toffee. That was the funniest part in any of the books. It really showed Mr. Weasley in all his glory.
4. Nearly Headless Nicks Death Day Party. This was where they lost me. There was so much they could have done in this scene. When I read that part after seeing who they cast as Nick, I thought this would be a great time for a Monty Python reunion. They could have had Graham Chapman in there. Since he would be playing a ghost they could have used his his King Arthur Character from the Holy Grail and just CGI-ed him in. Then you have Eric Idle and Terry Gillium as the Riders of the Headless Hunt. Plus you have a full band. What great timing to put in John Lennon, John Bonham, Jim Morrison, etc. The fact that this is a all British cast, you couldn’t go wrong.
5. They are putting people in just so you can see them. Like Grawp. In the book he has personality. In the movie he is just an overgrown retard with a bike bell. How hard is it to have someone say "HAGGARD!" Heck, I would have done it for them for free just to make it look right.
6. When did Dumbledore get so pissed? He was never like that. Even when faced with certain death, he was calm, cool, and collected. He only really got mad a couple of times.
7. How hard is it to stick to the story? I am a big fan of these books because they were so well written. I understand they will have to change some things around for times sake but why wouldn’t you tell where the map came from. To me that was a big part of the 3rd book and they totally skipped over it. That movie irritated me from the word go anyway. It was like the writer read the cliff notes and still screwed it up. This was also where they dropped the school uniforms.
8. They have sacrificed Dobby just to make certain scenes "Look Cooler." Perfect example. When did the Death Eaters learn to turn to smoke and fly. Voldemort was the only one to do that and it wasn’t until book 7. Plus it is not like they will go over budget on these movies.
9. Certain people just don’t look right. Like Slughorn. The scenes that I have seen him in so far, he looks nothing like the way she described him. How hard is it to find a big fat British actor.
10. They are cutting the 7th movie into 2 movies. Granted they are doing it so they can make it right, but who wants to bet that they will still screw it up?
So now that I have vented. What are your thoughts?
A couple of people have pointed out that this is not a question. My Question is what your thoughts were. If you don’t like the question, then you don’t have to answer.
I completely agree with you! It pisses me off how much they screw up the movies. They cut out the small details that make it awesome.
1. No Peeves – I know you already said it, but I still feel the need to vent my feelings!
2. No Bill and Fleur in the 6th movie! Seriously, Bill and Fleur are huge in the 7th movie, and taking them out of the 6th means that they’re gonna have to screw up SOMETHING in the the 7th/8th movie.
3. No battle scene a the end. Are you kidding me? I was so mad when I found out they were taking it out so that they’re not ‘repetitive’ with the 8th movie. That is like the stupidest thing ever! That battle is so crucial to the book!
4. Michael Gambon – He really messed up the character. I loved Richard Harris (R.I.P.) as Dumbledore! He was perfect in my opinion! Seriously, whats up with the beard pony tail thing Michael Gambon has?And when did Dumbledore ever lose his cool? Like in the GoF move: Dumbledore would NEVER have shaken Harry like they did in the movie. I mean, he got mad at Umbridge in the 5th book for doing just that to Cho’s friend. Which leads me to the next thing…
5. The entire OotP movie – Gosh, where do I begin. First of all, they just completely cut Quidditch from the movie. And I was looking forward so much to the Weasley Is Our King Song and seeing the Quidditch trials and everything! And they cut Dobby out of the movie! Dobby was supposed to be the one to lead Harry to the Room of Requirement, not Neville. And then there’s the fact that they decided to make Cho rat them out to Umbridge instead of her friend. Come on, how hard would it have been to stick to the book? And they messed up the MOM scene too! What happened to the rooms they had to go through before getting to the Hall of Prophecies? Like the brain room, and the room with the time turners and everything! I mean, I know it was a long book and it’s hard to fit it all into one movie, but still, they could have done better!
6. The muggle clothes thing; they’re not supposed to know how to dress like Muggles, they’re supposed to wear robes. And they don’t even wear uniforms after the 2nd movie!
7. They didn’t mention Ron and Hermione being Prefects at all.
8. Narcissa Malfoy – I’m sorry, but the lady that they got to play her looks NOTHING like the book description. She looks like McGonnagal with more makeup and some Photoshopping. She looks kind of old – too old to be Draco’s mom anyways, and her hair is weird: it’s like brown on top and then blond on the sides; she’s supposed to have long, beautiful blond hair. She dresses like an old lady too; I always imagined Malfoy’s mom as younger and more elegantly dressed. I am not saying that she is a bad actress or will play a horrible Narcissa Malfoy, I just think that they didn’t do great in picking her out because of her looks. I wish they would have stuck more to how she is described in the BOOK.
9. Harry’s eye’s are supposed to be green. Don’t get me wrong, Daniel Radcliffe has really nice eyes, but why can’t he just wear contacts for the movies? His eyes are like one of the main reasons Snape agreed to help keep him safe – they’re exactly like Lily’s, and Lily’s eyes were green.
1. Yeah, no Peeves. He would have made the movie a whole lot fun.
2. Most of them wear Muggle clothes. Plus, notice that it’s just the teenagers, or the youth rather, who are into wearing Muggle clothes. I guess they are more aware of other fashions unlike their predecessors who stick to traditional wizarding clothing.
3. No comment. I don’t see the point.
4. You’re just bringing more work to the CGI people. Give them a rest, please.
I won’t continue anymore. This is basically a useless rant. Create a blog, please. Don’t post your rants here.

I enjoyed reading that and agree with you. I hate the hype over Harry Potter altogether though – yes they are good books, but in my opinion do not deserve the credit they get. What about classics such as the Chronicles of Narnia? or the Lord of the Rings? Also I don’t believe that the recent books are up to the same standard as the earlier books. J.K. Rowling has let fame go to her head I feel and wrote the last books just to make money and didn’t concentrate on the plot or language enough. Also I believe that her signing the marble bust in her hotel room ("JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (652) on 11th Jan 2007") was an act of vandalism and should be punished as such.

I totally agree. I adore the books. They are one of my favourite series. And dont get me wrong I love the films, but they hardly give the books credit do they. Here are my 10 reasons:
1. Again Like yours No Peeves. I had no idea until your answer that Rik Myall was cast to play him. He would have been perfect seriously PERFECT! Again Peeves adds a lot of humour too which is lost in the films.
2.Sort of like 1. Though the films are funny at points, it loses all the whitty humour & quotes that JK uses in the books. Like the whole "snitch" spot thing in OOTP.
3.Some of the characters can sometimes be very OOC from the books. Like Ginny for instance. Shes very outgoing & like many red heads has a bit of a temper. We lose that alot in the films. Her character doesn’t seem to have a personality.
4.The very little amount of explaining the marauders.I have no idea how they’re gonna manage to make the princes tale scene in dh, because those who have watched the film, have no idea who they really are. We arent informed in the films that james potter & his friends actually created the map, plus something that really annoys me THEY CUT SNAPES WORST MEMORY SHORT! My friend who hadnt read hp at the time, was sitting there nudging me, asking what that was all about. It really bugs me as its one of my favourite chapters.
5. Less drama in the films than in the books. I love Sirius & cry everytime he dies in the books. Yet in the films its just BLA! I mean its hardly meaningful. No way as heartrenching as the books. I give my hats off to them for the funeral scene in GOF for Cedric Diggory, which infact did make me cry. That was meaningful & he wasnt even a main character. I know they couldnt have exactly have done the same for Sirius, but something similar would have set the scene.
6.Changing or adding parts of the plot for no reason. Like the whole neville finding gillyweed apart from dobby what was the point??People like dobby. Dobby is actually a much loved character. And the whole Cho telling on the DA, rather than her friend Marietta. I mean why??? And then she turns out to be on verituseum. Which I’m like helllooo??? We’re meant to be hating her, not feeling sorry as she was forced to have verituseam.
7.Just random bits added in. Like when Ron just says Piss off to harry in GOF, just to make it appear that they were getting older. I mean that was obvious. And these are meant to be family films.
8.The kiss scene in OOTP. Was it just me or was that the stiftest kiss scene ever. They seem to keep like a perfect two inches apart. There bodies didnt move what so ever. No hands in hair, round waiste ya de ya de ya. And overall no passion. It looked forced. It wasn’t meant to. I know its his first kiss & all but come on…
9.They miss out quidditch. Quidditch is always a winner. Plus a lot of people wondered after OOTP if harry still played. And we didnt get to see ron make the team. Oh & they miss out the dursleys in GOF. For no apparent reason. I mean thats probably the best dursley opening. The whole tongue toffee & all.
10. The whole 2 movies for DH. Why??? I mean it makes no point. I dont see how they can split into two. One of the films is goiing to end up quite boring & none of the action really happens until the end.
Anyways thats my rant. =D

My biggest problem about the movies is the lack of similarity to the books, especially when all the background info is left out. Every time my mom, who hasn’t read the books, sees one of the movies for the first time, I have to explain why people are doing certain things or what brought on others. The worst for that was Order of the Phoenix.
Besides that, I really don’t notice much else any more. I’m extremely glad that Deathly Hallows is going to be cut into two, but if it’s bad, I’m going to be very upset.

i agree with you because i mean there was a lot they cut out of the book and maybe the seventh one would probably suck but i did like the movies but i think peeves would have been a good character to have on there and they could have done a lot with the death day party

JUST 10? Dude, you need to watch them again! hahaha!
Allow me to add some of my own reasons, which I’m sure you’ll agree with:
~ No Peeves! I know you already said it, but it pisses me off something awful!
~ No Marauders! What the hell, that is one of my favorite subplots and they completely killed it! You know, before I read book 3, I didn’t even understand what the hell that map was or who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were, and then suddenly, you have Pettigrew being referred to as Wormtail in the next movie. Take from an outsider’s perspective. They would need everything translated for them.
~ OotP: the whole thing was a mess. Where to begin! It’s one of the most interesting and complex books plot-wise and they made it so horribly lame. My dad, my sister and my best friend who came with me to watch it, needed me to explain it to them afterwards. My dad fell asleep because he said he was looking forward to some magic and effects and wandwork but all the characters did was talk and talk and talk. My best friend needed me to tell her the entire story. My sister, whom I had read the book to was stunned and disgusted.
~ Michael Gambon, and this is one of the worst things to happen to the civilized world since WWII. I mean, come on! There are millions of old men out there, and most of them I bet would not have had the hairbrained idea to make Dumbledore Irish, make him psychotic and just kill his spirit.
~ Who the **** is Nigel? He came in right when Denis Creevy was supposed to come in and he played the same role Denis could have played. Why couldn’t they introduce him as Denis?? I think they do this sort of thing on purpose, h\just despite us.
~ How lame was the third task in GoF? I mean, the book was full of ideas to make it cooler and all they could come up with was a moving hedge. Big freaking woop!
~ Now, we come to the biggest outrage of all: when does it ever say that the entire DA get to see Voldermort as he is leaving the MOM in OotP??? No one sees him! They dessacrated it! Those blasphemers! I spit at them! It’s outrageous I tell you!!!!
Now, I have to disagree with you on one account. After seeing what happened to the movies after they got rid of Chris Columbus, and then later, of John Williams (which I still don’t understand and will never forgive them for), I was relieved to hear that the 7th movie was going to be cut in two. That means two of their lame movies might just be enough to cover the whole thing, and I think that, even if they don’t do it like we would like them to, they will include everything, or almost everything.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you for this most needed question and ask you, from one BOOK fan to another to please keep up the good work!
Cheers

I hope you have the patience to read all of it xp

i don’t know how many i can tell you but i’ma try my best to point mostly all of the things that pissssssseedd me off in the movie.
- i read the order of the phoenix a week before i watched the movie, and i was SHOCKED! first of all, dobby wasn’t there, he was the one who showed them where DA will meet. second of all, RON WAS SUPPOSED TO TRY FOR QUIDDITCH. those were the main 2 things that pissed me off when i watched the 5th movie.
- i agree WHY do they dress like muggles? in the book, it is supposed to be so hard to dress like a muggle, but in the movie, no problem.
-nearly headless nick’s party
i really wanted to see that.
- Sirius Black didnt have as much parts in the movie than the book .
- the 7th book was the BEST… specially when they escape and go to the jungle and hide there and etc. it was sooo exiting. i agree J.K.ROWLING wrote the books amazingly. i read the whole series every summer from book 1-7 and honestly, i cant read them past midnight because i get into the book so much and i get so scared. what i’m trying to say is that the book is so detailed it seems real when you read it, especially Deathly Hallows. i dont know how they are going to make the movie but i really hope it be good because little things, like lupin’s wedding is important and i really hope they make it good (dout it though)
harry potter is my favorite book (i dont know how everyone like twilight better) and it is so amazing i hope the movies were a little better though

1. i agree peaves would have been cool but movies do have a budget and it would have cost half a million to put peaves in there.
2.they do need to let up on the muggle clothes this is hogwarts for goodness sakes!!!!
3.that is the funniest part!
4.the death day scene would have been cool but again to put ghosts in the movie costs a lot of money. they have a budget.
5.again this is budget. and time. but if he had said that it would have been funny. i dont know if i would have stopped laughing.
6.i completely agree with this. this has been my biggest problem with the movies ever since the old guy who played dumbledore the first time died.
7.this is really hard for them to do. had the folowed the story on the fifth movie it would have been eight hours long!
the rest of them i agree with but dobby cost more money to put in teh movies than peeves and the reason they are doing the seventh book into two movies is so you get the whole story so im not complaining. they figured out a way to put more of the story into the movie.
References :
I certainly agree with you, except on the last one. I don’t think many people will want to sit through a 4 hour long movie. I have always thought Peeves deserved to be in the movies and Fred and George need to have almost all their little stunts in the movies. I mean, how could they not include the swamp? It was like the best part of the book? I was crying from laughing so hard. I hope they don’t fail the last movies though. I will be so angry if they do.

1. Harry’s eyecolor is not green.
I dont know why but it annoys me…
Everyone in book says you have your mothers eyes.
Like why cant he just wear contacts there not even bad.
2. They don’t add all the people in the book.
Like they make other people do important things, that
different characters in the book did.
Ex: Dobby finds gillyweed & room of requirment not Neville.
Ex: Cho Chang did not rat out the DA!!!! Her "friend" did
Ex: Professor Binns tell them about chamber of secrets
mcgonagall didnt in the book becuz she didnt wanna
scare them or something like that
Ex: I know i love Peeves!!
3. They mess up magical stuff
Ex: I know Death Eaters cant fly? It is a big deal
when Lord V does it… annoying!!!
Ex: Harry reads master occulomensists Snape’s mind
in the movie, instead of sneaking into pensive…
lol and i dont want to talk about how they messed that up.
but ill just say.. LILY was supposed to be in it
4. They make Dumbledore seem like a A-whole sometimes
its either the director writer or actor but he does
Ex: 5th movie he yells at everyone dont u have studying to do
Ex: the movies doesnt make it look like hes friends with harry
5. Dont you think in the books the trio is like better friends
then in the movie, it seems like they fight in every movie
well 4th and 5th and it lasts forever…
u make a lot of good points =]
i love hp movies anyways… even though
they have a lot of stupid flaws
i kinda wish they were longer lol
edit: oh yeah 1 more thing
the stuff they leave out is
annoying… quidditch ron
and hermione prefects, stuff
like that.

1. I know! I can’t believe they didn’t include Peeves. His parts in the books made me laugh so hard I cried! Did they really cast Rik Myall in the part? I didn’t know that, but, believe it or not, I always imagined Peeves to look and act just like him!
2. This didn’t really bother me. I mean, I noticed it but it was never a big issue with me. It’s not like it annoys me every time I watch the movies. I suppose the characters couldn’t wear cloaks/robes all the time, the only other option is muggle clothes.
3. Yes, this is one of the scenes that they left out that really pissed me off. Another was the feast in the first book when everyone is singing the school song (to their ow tune of course). Fred and George are the last ones left singing as they are singing the song as a slow funeral march and Dumbledore conducts their last few bars with his wand.
4. It would have been nice to see Nick;s deathday party but I think a Monty Python reunion would have ruined the ‘whole other world’ feel Harry Potter has going on.
5. Yes, Grawp did not act at all like the Grawp from the books. He was so cute when he said HAGGARD and HERMY. It was such an easy thing to do, to have someone voice him, I wish they had.
6. The second guy to play Dumbledore is just a little off. I think we only notice it because we are hardcore Harry Potter fans, whereas a lot of others wouldn’t realize. But yes, his portrayal of Dumbledore is not quite right. I heard somewhere that the actor has never even read the books. It’s no wonder he sucks. How hard is it to read the books of the movie you are starring in s you can get your character right!
7. I know! In the earlier movies they left out a few key details but in some of the latter movies they left out entire chunks of plot! Seriously, I watched the fifth movie with my mum (who has never read the books) and I had to keep explaining what was going on since the movie had left so much out that it didn’t een make sense!
8. Mhmmm. They have the characters doing all sorts of things that they can’t actually do in the books.
9. I haven’t seen Slughorn in any scenes, but I have seen pictures. You are right, he doesn’t look like he is described in the books. It’s annoying!
10. The seventh movies will probablynot be all that great, just like none of the others were that great. But at least it is going to be double the time to get the story right. Order of the Phoenix was the longest book, right? And they left so much out of that movie. Hopefully they can fit all that is important into the two part Deathly Hallows.
Another thing that bugs me is they left out SPEW. The movies mention nothing about Hermione’s campaign for House-elf rights, so what are they going to do in the Ron/Hermione kiss scene? Hermione kisses Ron because he finally understands what she’s been going on about with the whole SPEW and whatnot. They have completely screwed tat scene already and it hasn’t even been filmed.
Also, Harry’s eyes are green, G-R-E-E-N! It bugs me so much that they use Daniel Radcliffe’s blue eyes! I mean why can’t they just change them digitally or have him wear contacts!?
I thought the first three movies were okay, the fourth was worse and the fifth was godawful! I will still go to see the remaining movies as soon as the come out at the cinema and I do like them, simply because I love anything Harry Potter related. But I do think that they are been buggered up in places and could have been so much better.

I think both have their charms and they need to be treated separately. However, your second point is my biggest pet peeve with the movies. Excuse me, at that point we should have started to see less.

First of all let me just say that I love the Harry Potter books.
Very well – thought out question. I really agree with point 6. I miss the old Dumbledore that they cast in the first and second movie. I was seriously laughing when Dumbledore shook Harry in The Goblet of Fire and was yelling at him. I kept thinking that the real Dumbledore would never do something like that. When reading the books I always pictured Dumbledore as a calm old man who never raised his voice, and instead dealed with everything in a calm civilized manner. The new actor gets mad many times throughout the movies and it’s just not right. Not right at all.lol.
Point 10: I kind of like the fact that they’re cutting it into two movies because that means more harry potter for me.. lol. But it leaves the problem where do they stop the first one and begin the second? And won’t one movie have more action than the other? We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.
Casting: I think Harry, Hermione, and Ron were cast right and in the end that’s really all that matters to me. (Besides Dumbledore)Since it’s pretty hard to find actors that can exactly portray the character’s.
Dobby: I also wish we could see more of Dobby. I think he’s a great character! I mean there was no SPEW at all. I also miss Peeves in the movies!
Muggle Clothes: They actually do wear their robes in school. it’s just out of school that they wear their muggle clothes and I think in the books this was also true because I remember Hermione saying "Ron I packed your jeans" so yeah i think they can wear muggle clothes.
*** Harry’s eyes should be Green not Blue! Just saying..
Overall I think the director did the best with what he had. I mean they are pretty popular books and must be hard to live up to because so many people are expecting different things. It can’t satisfy everyone.

i also think daniel radcliffe is such a bad harry. his acting in 4 and 5 is amazingly rubbish, and HE DOESNT have the green eyes that are mentioned about 500, 000, 000 times
he doesnt act like harry either….he hasnt got the same kind of personality or anything….the glasses are cool though

1. I agree with you on this one.
2. This is because they want the movies to look attractive to those people who have not read Harry Potter. The movies need to look modern and cool to attract a larger audience. Book-based movies are challenging to make- they have to earn the respect and admiration of the fans of the books, and those who have never touched the books. Therefore, they do things like this. To tell you the truth, it doesn’t bother me too much. I kind of see it as one of those older vs younger generation sort of things- younger generation knows how to work a computer, but the older generation doesn’t. Younger generation knows how to successfully dress as a muggle, older generation doesn’t.
3. I think they cut this out for time’s sake. They do that a lot. There just isn’t enough time for each character to have their moment. So they save the moments for the main characters.
4. Once again, it would have taken up too much time. And the information the audience needs from it could easily have been put into dialogue in other parts of the movie.
5. Grawp isn’t there just to be there. They use him later as a trap for Umbridge.
6. I agree with you on this, too. I much preferred the original Dumbledore, and I don’t see why Michael Gambon couldn’t have stuck to literary Dumbledore’s character.
7. This is mostly because of time issues. The origins of the map wasn’t important to the general storyline. Harry Potter has such a complicated plotline that it’s crucial to not overload the audience with too much information. People would wonder at the important of Moony being Lupin and Prongs being James Potter. They’d see the connection, but they’d be like "Okay. That’s nice. So?" They need to skip details in order to make the story fit and flow well within the allotted time. It’s a challenge.
8. Once again, they do this to make the movie more attractive. It wasn’t necessary for Dobby to be the one to give Harry the gillyweed, and it did make sense for Neville to be the one to do it.
9. Slughorn I imagined to be pudgier, but I think his face is right.
10. I actually love this idea. I think they’ll do things *right* because they’re taking the time to add details with this.
What you have to understand, though, is that books and movies are two completely different medias of art. Books use language to convey the story, and has pages upon pages in which to tell the story. They can use all the detail they want and since they have no visuals (aside from the illustrations at the start of each chapter), they allow readers to visualize certain things such as characters for themselves.
Movies, however, can’t be much more than 3 hours. It’s just impractical. And with so little time in which to tell a story (400-600 pages long in some cases), details must be omitted and the storyline must be altered in order for the story to flow well and for the audience to get all the information they need. These movies also need to be able to attract all types of fans to make a profit and be successful, like I said before.
So you see, I think these movies deserve more credit than you’re giving them. Of course they won’t be exactly what you wanted and they won’t be exactly what Rowling wanted. But these movies are successful in that they capture the essence of the novels fantastically. And they convey the messages Rowling wanted to convey through her books. And they evoke the feelings the novels do for the corresponding events.
They’re really not all that bad. I find them quite entertaining, and it’s interesting to see the different interpretations that these movies provide, even between the different directors. I see the changes as a kind of creative move; I’m not sure how well they could have succeeded in making the Ministry battle in OOTP as intense as the books described within such a short timespan, if they hadn’t made the Death Eaters fly. And at the time this movie was being made, Deathly Hallows wasn’t out. How could the movie makers have known that the flying was restricted to only Voldemort? They really couldn’t have.
So, yeah. There are my thoughts.
Edit: Oh, look, the TD Troll came by. To counter his evil deeds, I’ll give everyone a TU.

I agree with most of your statements. The books were fantastic, but the movies just aren’t up to the standard.
The ones I agree with you most on are The Dumbledore one and the muggle clothing one. The muggle clothes just look so stupid, its always on in the book about how wizards don’t know how to dress as muggles, but here are all these teenage wizards in fashionable clothing.
And dumbledore! All he does is yell and sound really angry! The original actor who played Dumbledore portrayed the character really well, but the new guy is just weird…
