Wow, you might know nothing about classical music but already you have excellent taste! 8^)

I was very lucky some years ago, I got to work at a small radio station and broadcast classical music for several hours a week. As the music played, I would read the backs of the album covers (this was back in the vinyl days). I learned a lot just from them!

You might drop by the local library and see what they have. Reading about the composers and the music is all very well, but it’s the music that really matters. Keep listening to new things. For instance, if you like Beethoven’s 9th, you will like his other symphonies. Mozart wrote some incredible symphonies also, especially the later ones (39, 40 and 41, his last three, are his real masterpieces!) Beethoven wrote 32 piano sonatas and they are all pretty good, some are wonderful.

If you are into Usenet, there are some great pieces to be downloaded there also. (I haven’t bought a CD in years!)

Also if you have used record stores in your area, used classical CDs are often very very cheap, like $1 each. Many of them were cheap to begin with, ‘re-cuts’ of vinyl albums, sometimes decades old, but they are very good performances. The nice thing about classical is that it never goes out of style.

Wow, starting off with the Barber Adagio? Great choice! It seems most people enter into classical music with the overplayed popular cliché pieces like Für Elise. But you are already listening to one of the great staples of the modern orchestral repertoire!

I’ll recommend some other music for you and group it according to how accessible I think it is.

By "accessible," I mean relatively easier to appreciate by someone who isn’t as experienced with classical music. These are all GREAT works. Maybe as you become more familiar with the listening process you can move on to some of the harder-to-swallow(but still great!) pieces.

Remember that classical music is different from all other types of music: You have to pay attention to it if you really want to enjoy it fully. It is like really engaging your mind and being absorbed by a work of art as opposed to just glancing at a cool-looking drawing. That is ESPECIALLY true with the pieces in the second and third categories.

That brief list should provide you with many hours of enjoyment. There is SO much wonderful music out there, and I am really glad you have gained an interest in classical music! P.S. Don’t use youtube, no matter how tempting! The sound quality sucks and this great music doesn’t deserve to be listened to on it. Use the local library or iTunes! There are also some good torrents to be found!

P.S.S. The first piece I listed, Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, is a really great piece. This should be the first one you get, IMO. It is really accessible and easy to follow and is also a wonderful, excellently written piece. Highly recommended. Get the Van Cliburn recording if possible.

Classical music is beautiful and I’m glad I found it, hidden in the back behind the shelves all dusty and unused.

I LOVE Vitamin String Quartet, I can listen to my favorite songs in a classical tune.

Can you introduce me to other great classical music?

A lot of people don’t appreciate good music nowadays because some of the pieces of poo that are on the radio and are popular today. They’ve convinced people that whatever is on the radio is good music when some of it is not. They think if they listen to classical music they’re "weird" or something.

A lot of people also don’t like it because some classical songs are long and if you’re not REALLY into the music you lose interest and it becomes boring.

Anyways, I just realized all my little paragraphs start with A.. and I’m not sure of some other good classical music, but I know one song that is my personal favorite: Mendellssohn – Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave).

I would recommend Schubert – Ave Maria by a mile. Its such a beautiful piece to remember your special day by.
Mendelssohn’s ‘Spring song’ is also nice too.

If you find classical music ‘very boring’ something I find utterly aghast then may I suggest you’ve actually listened to close to nothing.
Have you heard the ‘Prelude and Liebestod’ from ‘Tristan und Isolde’ by Richard Wagner it completely trounces Lux Aeterna into the ground.
As for spellbinding,
the last two string quartets Nos.14 in D minor known as ‘Death & The Maiden’ and No.15 in G major both composed by Franz Schubert.
‘Metamorphosen’ by Richard Strauss,
‘Adagio for Strings’ by Samuel Barber,
I could go on all day, suffice to say there are myriads of superior pieces waiting for you to discover.
