I’m currently playing classical and pop (marching) music and am interested in upgrading my mouthpiece (4C, there’s a lot of room for improvement). I for sure plan on continuing with the marching, but I still want a mouthpiece usable for classical playing, as I might pursue that as well.

I’m planning on spending under $100, and have no clue about mouthpiece quality.

Also, what effect do chamber and facing have on sound?

You’ll want to get a Selmer mouthpiece, ask about specific models at the store. Facing affects the gap between the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece. With larger facings, you can push more air through the sax and be louder, but with smaller ones, there is better tone and control.

Hello Folks:

How many of you guys listen to smooth jazz? In addition to the fact that I listen to EDM (electronic dance music, such as techno, electronica, drum & bass, house, etc,), rock music (industrial, metal, punk, classics, oldies, etc.), classical music (pipe organ, chamber, symphony, etc.), country music (folk, bluegrass, mountain, mainstream, etc.), and blues (traditional, modern & zydaco), I listen to a lot of different types of jazz as well. I have a major question, though.

Back in either the mid to late 1990s or the early 2000s when I was home one night watching one of the local channels. Soon, an television sitcom came on (I never got its name), with its theme song playing and everything. I think that the show was either a crime drama or a comedic drama show; I am not sure. Well, I just loved the theme song; it was smooth and jazzy. I also heard this same theme song on the radio, around the time they had a station for smooth jazz.

I am sure the show was not NEW YORK UNDERCOVER or MOONLIGHTING. I am sure that there are some legal shows that feature good jazzy theme songs. I am looking for the song that I heard. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

Net_Jock

The only Show from the 90’s that i can remember that had a jazzy theme to it was NIGHT COURT. If the is’nt the show you are looking for, go to goggle or yahoo search and try to find it.

FESTIVALS AND MAJOR EXHIBITIONS
All through the year Istanbul hosts a number of arts and culture festivals some of which have a long history and are already on the calendar of prominent cultural activities in Istanbul. They are nicely scattered all across the year thus giving the inhabitants of Istanbul and visitors alike the chance to be part of them.

INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL (February)
This festival was added to the list of Istanbul’s film festivals in 2002 and presents cinema-lovers with films largely ignored by large film companies and independently produced unconventional films. It also hosts panels, workshops and lounge activities.

INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL (April)
Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and the Arts since 1982, this festival aims to encourage the commercial distribution of quality films and assist in promoting Turkish films
on the international stage. The festival contains over 180 films including new works that have been featured at festivals during the past year as well as unforgettable classic films and works by
a series of young and old masters of the cinematic art.

INT. ISTANBUL ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL (April)
Initially organized as an architecture festival, the Biennial aims to bring together international architecture the professionals and students biannually in Istanbul.

CRR INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL (April)
This is a festival organized by and held in the Cemal Re?it Rey Concert Hall with world famous ballet and dance groups. The festival coincides with World Dance Day on 29 April.

INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL THEATRE FESTIVAL (May)
The festival represents a branch of the performing arts. It ranges from classical interpretations to experimental studies, theatrical dance, theatre performances, street plays and dramatic operas.
Over the last 15 years, it hosted 260 performances and 2,700 artists from 19 countries and has reached a total audience of 270,000.

PHONEM BY MILLER ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLATEAU (May)
This mini-festival features the cult and upcoming names of modern electronic music and aims to be a smaller but comparable counterpart to Sonar in Spain or Club Transmediale in Berlin.

ÜLKER MOZART DAYS (May)
This is a one-week classical music event which focuses on the music of Mozart. The line-up encompasses both national and international artists with occasional crossover acts (such as jazz and traditional Turkish music).

INTERNATIONAL PUPPET FESTIVAL (May)
This festival has hosted numerous puppet groups from various countries around the world including the US, France, Portugal, Spain, Holland, Greece and Austria. It has a diverse programme that includes an array of conferences, exhibitions, workshops and film screenings.

TÜNEL ART FESTIVAL (May)
This festival provides an artistic meeting place by promoting the dynamics of Tünel, one of the hottest spots in Istanbul. Its primary purpose is to support the development of interdisciplinary art and to encourage the interaction and cooperation of Turkish and foreign artists.

INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL MUSIC FESTIVAL (June)
In 2005 it celebrated its 34th anniversary; making it Istanbul’s oldest running festival. It brings together everyone who enjoys musical quality and variety, offering a wide range of events, such as international orchestral concerts, opera performances, chamber orchestra concerts, recitals, chamber music concerts and explanatory music sessions. The festival focuses on a specific theme every year.
EFES PILSEN ONE LOVE FESTIVAL (June)
For the last four years, this festival has brought the cult and alternative stars of the global pop music scene (such as Peter Gabriel,Manu Chao and the Chemical Brothers) to Istanbul along with other less well-known but important local and international acts.

ROCKISTANBUL (June)
The Rockistanbul festival brings the famous names of rock and heavy metal music scene to a young audience on a beach on the outskirts of Istanbul. Music lovers have the chance to listen to more than 45 live performances over three days, in addition to a variety of activities and outdoor events.

INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL (July)
In addition to jazz music, this festival includes concerts from other musical genres such as pop, rock, blues and world music, while still maintaining the distinction of being Europe’s best organized jazz festival. Artists who have performed at the International Istanbul Jazz Festival include Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Sting, Elvis Costello, Tori Amos and Ibrahim Ferrer.

ISTANBUL INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL (August)
Founded in 1997 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and the Arts, this modern art event has always been based on a central theme. Close to 500 members of the press and over 2,000 critics, museum and art curators and gallery managers participate in the event. A total of 90 artists from 42 countries took part in the 8th Biannual.

I

My list would be like this, as number one being the first option; the rest can shuffle in between them.

1- INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL (April)

2 – INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL MUSIC FESTIVAL (June)

3 – INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL JAZZ FESTIVAL (July)

4 – AKBANK JAZZ FESTIVAL (Oct)

5 – TÜNEL ART FESTIVAL (May)

and the rest of the remaining festivals on the list.

I grew up with two professional (classical) musicians as my parents and have been attending concerts ever since my attention span was long enough to sit through an entire piece. I began piano lessons at age seven but nobody, including myself, ever thought I’d want to pursue the instrument — especially because I was a huge slacker — but they claimed I did have "musical talent". A year ago I began to rediscover classical music and now it’s practically all I listen to. I am taking piano lessons at the conservatory again and I am working harder than ever. I finished the Bach G major French suite in under two months, a record for me, and my teacher is impressed and believes it is at a pretty high level already. However, I have never been invited to play a concert, my score on the exams from previous years are only in the 80%- early 90% range and my father, a chamber and solo violinist and distinguished university professor, believes I am missing a lot of practical and theoretical skills from the days I didn’t believe in practicing (I have also never taken any theory or ear training lessons) — and he constantly reminds me it is extremely hard to get into the business, especially as a pianist, which I am very much aware of. But now I am 16 and I am passionate about music, and I’m determined to incorporate it into my studies.

My question is, what can I do? Will a huge amount of practising this late in my life get me into a good music school? I am not looking to become a famous musician: I just want to explore as much music as I can. Or am I doomed to become a music critic, or just a Passionate Music Lover who never made it, with this little skill? I suck at math and physics, so becoming a record producer like my mom probably won’t work either — although I admit I am very interested in the artistic, musical aspect of the job.

Help! What can I do?
Thank you!

Great question.

You are fortunate that you are not trying to become famous. It unfortunately probably is too late for that.

You are also lucky that despite the fact that there are so many pianists, there are many opportunities for pianists to work (way more than for classical saxophonists like me!). You probably won’t want to teach 5-year-olds, but accompanying, for example, is an important skill and can be very rewarding, leading to learning a huge variety of music.

Starting from here, it might be difficult for you to practice enough in the next couple of years to get into a good music school. But you have a couple of options. You could apply to schools and hope to get accepted at a mediocre one and then transfer after a couple of years. Teachers often take students with less technical ability if they see musical promise. Or, if you have the opportunity, you could take a few years off from school and really focus on piano before applying.

Best of luck!!
